Adventures in Bookbinding

One day I hope to take a class for it so I can learn the right way to do it. But till then I will make these mutants.

Made from reused chipboard and an awesome paper bag that I saved.

Very underwearish but I like it.

recommended viewing for graphic designers

a documentary about the typeface Helvetica. A tad on the long side but I still found it pretty amusing (apparently European designers are hil-lar-ious, who knew?). I think I would have liked it even more if I was a graphic designer. I don't work that much with typography, but for the people who do - it should be a really fun film.

above you see some *authentic* Brooklyn figs! :) A bit past their prime but yummy nonetheless. My grandparents have about 5-6 fig trees in their backyard so August is non-stop-fig-eating action month for my family.

Mutation Craft Fair

My internet buddy Amy and I worked on this poster together for the Mutation Craft Fair that is coming up in November. If you live near Savannah and want to participate you still have time to apply. I am thinking of stopping by for some tourist action in Savannah that weekend. I've never visited Georgia so I'd love to check it out.

obsession of the week:

making envelopes with scrap paper.

I folded the paper over so I couldn't see the writing, added the eyelets, sewed the edges shut and then glued it into my sketchbook. Et voila! A new handy dandy envelope for collecting more scraps of paper/business cards/receipts.

Here's the other one I made with used cardstock.

office chair elements recycled

Here are some pics of what my dad + I have done with some of the office chair elements.

He found the wood for the base of the ottoman on the street. He chopped it up and reassembled it according to my sketch. Sort of- he used a bit of artistic license by adding a bombastic drawer to it...then he attached the casters from the office chair. We painted it using left over wall paint which I thought would be a good idea, but I don't really like the way it looks so I am going to just leave the interior parts and knob grey-blue and spray paint the rest black (phase 3). I reshaped the chair cushion with a blade and scissors and covered it with (sheep-patterned) fabric from my stash and staple-gunned it to the lid and sealed the interior edges with a wide ribbon. I will take a pic of the inside after I finish painting it.

Below is a pillow I made using the foam and batting from the top part of the chair. I added some fiberfill to fill out the corners.

I saved the pleather from the chair as well. I think I can possibly rework that into another project.

Warning for potential shoe cabinet purchasers:

chair search winner

...for now.

Thanks to the kind commenters on Decor8 I found a new office chair. The Skruvsta at Ikea. I was originally going for the plain white one, but the Ikea I went to was out of stock/oversold of 90% of their office chairs including the white Skruvsta and this patterned one was the LAST ONE in stock! I think I am better off with the patterned fabric anyway in case the dye in my jeans rubs off it won't be as obvious. An unexpected plus was when I brought it home it matched up perfectly with my orangey-red inspiration wall. YAY for coordination. Now I just have to test it out to see if it can withstand 8-10 hours of computer work/ internetting every day. My back was seriously killing me after working while sitting on a folding chair! I guess that just shows how important it is to have a good back-supporting chair.

Thanks again for the tips! I ♥ the internet!

Another member for chair heaven

It is official- I broke my chair. The metal bar holding the seat on to the base completely snapped off! (tear) I asked Holly from the awesome site decor8 for some help in finding a new (+ affordable) office/task chair. Have you seen any good ones out there?

I am in the process of taking the materials from my old chair and turning them into something new. Stay tuned for the results! :)

MOMA/Muji loot

1. metal bookend / pen holder. YAY for multi-functional.
2. notebook with a removable zip pouch plastic cover. It is reusable, me gusta.
3. rod magnets
4. notebook set. This was the best deal- 5 notebooks for $6. Nice.
5. magnet hooks
6. zip bag w/ handle. Got damaged on the way home from the hooks :( $8 bucks down the drain. Well, I guess it is still functional but it looks bad.

I can't wait till Muji opens its own store in Manhattan. It should be happening within the next few months.

uhh...um...

I think my chair is possessed! It must of noticed that I was postin' smack about it on the internet and an hour later it completely broke down!!! I guess this is what I get for bragging about my handywoman skills (below).

Time to bust out the tools!

I have an announcement:

On Thursday August 30th I successfully stopped the squeaking of my office chair. Needless to say the sound was driving me insane for months. I shall suffer the squeakage no longer.

Thank you for your time.
